Edith May Filip, of Point Comfort, Texas, passed away peacefully early Thursday morning, December 7, 2023. It was always Edith's wish to pass away peacefully.

She was born to the late August Cervenka and Viola Drozd on April 29, 1927. Edith was born at home in Komensky, Texas by midwife, but her birth certificate reads being born in Moravia, Texas, just a few miles from Komensky.

Edith was an Extraordinary Woman that loved life, people, sunshine and earth/soil. Her early years were farm life in Komensky and the second farm/ranch in Moravia. During those years, electricity, natural gas, refrigeration, basic plumbing were not available to them. Many times when we would complain, she would remind us of just how easy we really have it in today's world. In those days, if you wanted to cook something, you first had to start a fire in a wood burning stove and hopefully the wood was already cut and ready to use.

Edith's middle name on her birth certificate is May. She used to say her middle name was Marie and liked the name Marie better. Her baptismal certificate reads Mary as her middle name. Maybe it's just the way it turned out almost 100 years ago. The person taking the information wrote what they thought they heard. So now you know why she called herself Edith Marie Filip, but the birth certificate reads May.

Additionally, Edith spoke the Czech language until English was taught to her and the local Czech pioneer's children in grade school.

Edith graduated from Komensky School as a Senior. Komensky School was a single long building with 12 rooms; one for each grade, 1st grade to 12th grade.

Additionally, Edith was athletic and loved sports, especially volleyball and baseball. Many of the boys in school protested her participation in baseball as she was able to catch fly balls in the outfield and hit home runs. In volleyball, Edith and a neighboring farm girl that was very tall perfected the spike that won them many tournaments. Edith was the "set up" as she proudly liked to call it. She used to tell us the stories of how she would get in trouble for practicing volleyball on the side of their home instead of working in the field after school.

Edith had incredible canning abilities that often won her the most ribbons, as well as First Place and Grand Champion in several categories at the Calhoun County Fair. People who have eaten her preserves always complimented on the clarity of her jellies and the neatness of the items in the jars, which she took the time to place individually in each jar. This was something that we as her children witnessed year after year. Edith's goal in such perfection was to have everyone enjoy the look and taste of every bite. Her comment after completing a canning session was "They will always remember it."

Edith worked in the cafeteria for the Calhoun County Independent School District for 18 years. Many were the stories of how she cared for each child and their wellbeing, loving all the children she served.

Her attention to detail was meticulous in all that she set her hands to do. Sewing clothes for her children was a passion for her. Many times, women would ask "Edith, where did you buy those clothes for your children?" She would reply "I sewed them myself." We remember those days, and now, how precious they were.

Anyone that knew Edith knows she did everything to perfection to the best as she could. Edith did everything with forethought and consideration of all people involved. She thought of everyone.

Edith had a spectacular memory, often remembering to minute detail the events and how it happened. She remembered from the distant past to the current times family and friends' lives.

Edith was a dedicated wife to her husband, Leo Henry Filip. She served her children, Patricia, James and Sandra to the best of her ability. We were always fed by her incredible cooking abilities that made us healthy and strong. One of Edith's commitments was to never have a babysitter. She sacrificed for us to keep us protected, for which we are forever grateful.

The list of who Edith was and the individual events she lived could easily fill several books. We are thankful that God allowed us to be her children.

Edith was known for her voice. It was strong and filled with life.

Edith is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Filip (Kenneth); son, James Leo Filip; her sister, Bernice Barborak; grandchildren, Brittany Barker, Brooke Filip, Jonathan Filip, Collin Lansdale, Christian Lansdale; and great grandson, Brody Barker.

Edith is preceded in passing by her husband, Leo Henry Filip; daughter, Sandra Jane Filip Lansdale; her brothers, Frank and Ben Cervenka; and sister, Georgie Roznovsky.

Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic Church in Moravia, Texas, with the parish rosary to be recited at 9:30 AM. The rosary will be prayed in English and Czech to honor Edith's heritage. Interment will follow in the parish cemetery.
