Gerald Winkelman passed away peacefully, surrounded by family who loved him dearly, on October 31, 2025, at the age of 80 .

Born on December 26, 1944, in Cameron, Texas, Gerald was the son of Arthur and Edna Winkelman. He grew up alongside his older brother, Wayne, and later moved with his family to Schulenburg. From a young age, Gerald was surrounded by a family that deeply valued education, and he nurtured a lifelong love of learning and music that shaped the course of his life.

Gerald graduated from Schulenburg High School, where he proudly played tuba in the band, and went on to earn an associate degree in music from Blinn College. He continued his studies at Texas Lutheran University, where he received a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a specialization in music. It was there, in the school cafeteria, that he met the love of his life, Shirley, thanks to a well-timed introduction from her roommate. They were married on June 13, 1970, at Zuehl Redeemer United Church of Christ.

Gerald and Shirley began their married life in Lockhart and after two years moved to Schulenburg. Gerald devoted his career to teaching elementary students in Shiner, Weimar, Lockhart, and Flatonia. He later worked at Galipp's Supermarket and gave private piano lessons to countless children in the community. Music was a constant presence in his life and his home. Family and friends alike will remember the warm, regular sound of the piano echoing through the house.

He was a faithful member of his church choir and could often be found at the piano bench, sharing hymns and joy with those around him. Gerald loved gardening, a good bowl of Blue Bell ice cream, and spending time at the family farm: fishing, barbecuing, and enjoying easy laughter and warm camaraderie with his parents, wife, and children.

Above all, Gerald was a man of extraordinary kindness. Soft-spoken, gentle-hearted, and endlessly patient, he treated everyone with warmth and genuine care. His greatest joy was his family, and he leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and compassion.

Gerald is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Shirley Winkelman; son, Brent Winkelman and his wife Jennifer; daughter, Sarah Winkelman; grandchildren, Arthur Reed Winkelmann, Ben Winkelmann, Elliott Winkelmann, Olivia Johnson, and Aiden Johnson; and his brother, Wayne Winkelman and wife Cathy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Edna Winkelman.

A celebration of Gerald's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 8, 2025, at Weimar United Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. from the church. Interment will take place in Schulenburg City Cemetery.

Gerald's gentle spirit and loving heart touched so many. He will be deeply missed and forever cherished by all who knew him.
