Grace Sumbera, 83, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, with her family by her side. She was born November 11, 1942 in St. John, Texas, to Fred and Martha Hermis. She attended St. John School and graduated from Schulenburg High School in 1962. Grace and Leonard met at Swiss Alp in 1961 and were married June 1, 1963 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Schulenburg. After the wedding, they settled in Houston and moved to Sharpstown to start a family.
Grace was a homemaker who stayed at home to raise her three sons. After Leonard retired, they moved to St. John and enjoyed farming, dancing, picnics, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Grace and Leonard loved traveling far and wide to enjoy polka dancing with each other and making new friends from around the country. She was a hardworking, loving, and committed wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her favorite memories were those spent surrounded by her family at the farm.
Grace is survived by sons, Darrell Sumbera and wife Kim; Don Sumbera and wife Jolie; and Dwayne Sumbera and wife Cindy; grandchildren, Ross Sumbera and wife Reagann, Abigail Klein and husband Jackson, Corey Sumbera and wife Allison, Hannah Sumbera, Kaitlyn Sumbera, Kate Sumbera, Clay Sumbera, and Vivian Sumbera; 7 great-grandchildren; brother, Harvey Hermis and wife Evelyn; sisters-in-law, Josie Hermis, and Virgie Holub and husband Wesley; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Sumbera; parents, Fred and Martha Hermis; and brother, Walter Hermis.
The family will receive friends at 5:00 p.m. with the rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, from Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg.
Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in St. John. Interment will follow in St. John Catholic Cemetery.
