Leon H.
Popp
Mar 24, 1934 — Jun 21, 2025
Leon H Popp, age 91, of High Hill, Texas, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
Leon was born March 24, 1934, to Herman J. Popp, Sr. and Adela Berger Popp. He graduated from The High School of St. John's Seminary in San Antonio, Texas, in May 1952. And soon after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the U.S. Army Reserve.
In his early years, Leon worked on the family farm and as a carpenter for the Grohmann & Son Co. Leon remained on the family farm, raising cattle, chickens, sheep; while growing corn and maize. He also spent countless hours bailing hay, a testament to his lifelong dedication to hard work and rural life.
He was a devoted and lifelong member of St. Mary Catholic Church in High Hill, where he faithfully served his community in several roles. He devotedly maintained the High Hill Cemetery for many years, contributed to the work of the St. Joseph's Society, and was a familiar face working at the annual parish picnics. He was a proud third degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Leon especially loved attending local church picnics, where he looked forward to visiting with family and friends. Fried chicken and sausage dinners, complete with all the traditional trimmings, were among his favorites.
Later in life, Leon pursued new interests, enrolling in a Computer Series Program at Blinn College in Schulenburg. He proudly completed the three-month course as the "most senior" student in his class.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alton Popp and Herman J. Popp. Jr.; and his sister, Dorothy Bartos.
He is survived by his beloved nieces and nephews: Wayne Bartos (Annette), Myra Duncan (Carl), Bill Bartos (Victoria), Randy Bartos (Jennifer), Mark Bartos (Carrie), Denise Edmonds (Ron) ,and Kerri Epstein (Rob); as well as many great nieces and great nephews.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mary Catholic Church in High Hill on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 9:30 a.m., and Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in High Hill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Leon's memory can be made to the High Hill Restoration Fund or a charity of your choice.
