Peggy Sue Bishop Hendon, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, cousin, & aunt passed away Saturday morning on October 14, 2023.

She was born on April 7, 1930, in Buffalo, Texas, to John Clayton and Mary Riley Bishop. Her family moved to Houston in the early 40's, where she attended elementary and middle school & then graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School in May of 1947. After graduating high school, Peggy worked for Dr. Finley, a prominent dentist in Houston. On February 27, 1950, she married E. J. Hendon also of Houston. They were blessed with 4 Children, Susan, Clay, Sally, & Sandi.

Peggy and E.J. raised their family in Houston, Texas early on then Seabrook, San Marcos, and ultimately Schulenburg. Peggy had an amazing life and career.  She started college after her 4 children were all born.  She went to school at night beginning at San Jacinto Junior College, then University of Houston until she earned her bachelor's degree in teaching. Completing her Master's degree at what was then Southwest Texas in San Marcos. Peggy taught 1st grade in Kyle, Texas and then continued teaching first grade when she and E.J. moved to Schulenburg in 1973.  Education was a passion for both Peggy & E.J.  They found great reward in mentoring and working tirelessly helping young adults earn their G.E.D.  Peggy and E.J. were devoted to one another and family and it was something you did not have to look for it was there to be seen by all.

It was in the late 70's that they ventured out into a new career with Live Oak Plant Farm, a wholesale greenhouse business. Peggy kept this going long after the loss of her beloved husband, E.J. She poured all her energy into truly growing some of the most beautiful plants and had retail customers from Houston to San Antonio. She was active in every part of the business and always had a kind word and encouragement for all the many different people she met along the way.

Peggy was an amazing cook and loved family gatherings. She was an excellent baker and her pies and cobblers were memorable. Every year she spent hours making homemade jams and jellies which she lovingly gave to family, friends, and neighbors.

The family would like to thank the staff at College Place along with Regency Nursing Center for their care and love for our mom.  A very special thank you also goes to the nurses and caregivers of Hospice of South Texas for their tender and nurturing care.

Peggy is survived by her four children and their spouses; Susan Bingham and husband Rodney, Clay Hendon and wife Gina, Sally Brumbaugh and husband Larry and Sandra Hanson and husband Larry; grandchildren and spouses, Wes and Tammy Bingham, Jeremy and Katherine Bingham, Elizabeth and Todd Quirk, Megan and Kenneth Tuttle, B.J. Dach, Alex and Will Fowlkes and John Dennis Anthony; sister, Jonette West; brother, Jim Bishop; and 11 great-grandchildren, Reese & Ryann Bingham, Presley Bingham, Abigail, Evelyn, and Jackson Tuttle, Rhett & Rigsby Quirk, Carson Kennedy, Annabel, and William Fowlkes; as well as many nieces, and nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Visitation will be held on Friday, October 20, 2023 prior to the service at First Baptist Church Schulenburg, Texas, 110 North Upton Ave. from 9:00 a.m.– 11:00 a.m. with Celebration of Life at 11:00 a.m also at the church. Burial will follow in Schulenburg City Cemetery.

Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home, 701 South Main, Schulenburg, Texas will be handling the services.
