It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Steven Russell Mays, who died on February 27, 2026, in La Grange at the age of 71.

Although he was born in Midland, Texas, Steve graduated from Schulenburg High School, Class of 1974. He was also a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Schulenburg. Steve was a mechanic by occupation and worked for the City of Schulenburg for about 25 years. He retired in 2011, but continued to do part-time mechanic work at his home near St. John, and being a handyman of different trades. Steven's favorite pastimes were HUNTING and fishing. He also enjoyed traveling when he was able to and cherished friendships. He held his good friends and family very dear in his heart.

Steve is survived by his son, Brian Mays and his wife Angie of College Station; son, Shawn Mays and wife Dalia of Cypress; son, Clayton Allen Mays of Schulenburg; daughter, Courtney Christine Mays of Anson; granddaughters, Brianna Whitson and husband Robert, Kyra Mays Ramirez and husband San Juan; and Kinslee C. Mays; great-grandchildren, Copper and Mona; brothers, James Mays of Luling, and Don Johnson of Tennessee; as well as two nephews and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Connie Sue Zak Mays; parents, Wilbur Clayton Mays and Christine Janet Funke Mays; and older brother, Richard Mays.

His Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4, 2026, from Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Home in Schulenburg. A private inurnment will take place in St. John at a later date.
